February was an exciting and jam-packed month for Troop 12. We're not ones to let the cold winter temps stop us from having fun and doing exciting things.
First up, leader elections took place on February 10th. Every six months, the troop elects a new set of patrol and other leaders for the Troop. Scouts must prepare and deliver a speech to the troop. Afterwards, all scouts present vote to elect the new leaders. Congratulations to the new Senior Patrol Leader, Austin B., Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders Patrick S., Seth N., Jonathan S., Troop Guide Sawyer B., and Patrol Leaders Ethan G. (Falcon Patrol) and Neil C. (Wolf Patrol).
The following week, the troop had two events. First up was the Red & Green banquet. This is a special court of honor where the troop not only recognizes all the awards, ranks, and merit badges scouts have earned over the past 6 months, but also formally transitions leadership from the previous troop leaders to the newly elected leaders. Friends and family are invited to share in the scouts' success and a delicious meal.
Later that week, the scouts began preparing for the upcoming campout at Camp Wokanda, learning about climbing safety, climbing operations, how to climb, how to put on their climbing gear, and learning about potential dangers they might encounter while climbing. This was all in preparation to earn the climbing merit badge at Upper Limits in Bloomington, IL, that weekend as well. The scouts had an absolute blast at Upper Limits. This, along with Skiing are shaping up to be a new troop favorite and highly likely to become an annual winter tradition.
Rounding out the last week of the month, the scouts focused on post-campout recovery and administrative tasks, including logging their camping and service hours. We also worked on rank and sign-offs.
Lastly, Troop 12 ended the month with a Service Project. We partnered with Cub Scout Packs 6 and 94 to take part in the Lincolnway Area Mobile Pack (LAMP) event for Feed My Starving Children.
Feed My Starving Children is a nonprofit organization empowering volunteers to pack meals for the malnourished in nearly 70 countries, hungry in body and spirit. Our Troop was part of a larger team that helped pack over 130+ meals and fill up 4 pallets of healthy meals.
